You have the Best, and you have the rest…

Raffaele Riva is an Italian film director, actor, and screenwriter renowned for his films having elements of Neorealism in them which explores the lives of ordinary people during Italy’s turbulent post-World War II period. His films have won numerous awards including those from the Venice Film Festival and Cannes Film Festival. His most famous film was called “Bicycle Thief”. He died on October 29th 2014 at age 92 in Rome where he had lived since 1939.

His Achievements

Raffaele Riva is the Italian Neorealist filmmaking master, who directed and wrote several of his most acclaimed films. He was born in Naples in 1924. During World War II he worked as a volunteer with the Royal Italian Army. After the war he enrolled at the University of Rome where he studied History and attended courses at the National Film School. While attending these classes, Riva decided to take a job at an insurance firm to make ends meet while pursuing his film studies. He developed skills in writing and editing that would prove valuable as he began to work on films during his spare time.

Riva’s first feature film was commissioned by a fellow student at his university as a thesis project. He used the money from his job to finance the film and used it as a showcase for work he’d done in his spare time. When the university president saw the film, he gave Raffaele Riva permission to make another one; however, Riva lost the funding for that project after it became clear that it wasn’t going to be completed on time. That forced him out of his job at the insurance firm and once again resorted to making films in his spare time using money from his family and friends.

Raffaele Riva is an example of an artist who started out with no money or connections and worked his way up to be one of the most notable and well-known figures in the history of Italian filmmaking. Refer to this article for more information.
